No. While the infection may make the tooth extremely sensitive, the vast majority of root canal treatments are entirely painless.
We’ll make sure the area is completely numb before starting work. While an infected tooth will more often than not result in tooth pain before you see us, we’ll be able to relieve this pain upon your arrival and throughout the treatment.

The area might feel tender after the treatment, but this rarely continues beyond a day or two. Feel free to contact us if you’re unsure or anxious about it.

Depending on the tooth and the type of infection, the colour may darken after the treatment. Usually, we use materials that prevent this from happening, but it will depend on your specific circumstances. If this is a problem, we’ll be able to restore the appearance of your teeth post treatment.

The aim of the treatment is to remove all infection from the root canal. The root is then cleaned and filled to prevent any further infection. Root canal treatment is a skilled and time-consuming procedure. Most courses of treatment will involve two or more visits to us.

At the first appointment, the infected pulp is removed. Any abscesses, which may be present, can also be drained at this time. The root canal is then cleaned and shaped ready for the filling. A temporary filling is put in and the tooth is left to settle.

The tooth is checked at a later visit and when all the infection has cleared, the tooth is permanently filled.

The only other option would be to extract the tooth, however this is and should be viewed as the last resort. As dentists, we always prefer to save a tooth.

Information you may find on the Internet or elsewhere, claiming that if you receive a root canal treatment you’re more likely to become ill or contract a disease in the future simply isn’t true. This false claim was based on long-debunked and poorly designed research conducted nearly a century ago, long before modern medicine understood the causes of many diseases. There is no valid, scientific evidence linking root canal treatment to disease elsewhere in the body.
