Teeth tend to stain over time, either due to age and wearing down of the outside layers of enamel, or due to drinking red wine, tea or coffee, smoking, and even certain types of food. Whatever the case, your teeth will eventually become darker and yellower over time.

How does the teeth whitening treatment work?
After our initial comprehensive assessment, we’ll check your teeth and gums to ensure you’re suitable for the type of whitening chemical we use. If you are, we’ll then take an impression of your bite and use it to build a custom made whitening tray. We’ll then place the whitening chemical into this tray to fit around your teeth. This tray is left on for a period of time and will ensure that the whitening solution reaches each and every tooth, removing the yellow colour and leaving you with a sparkling smile.
How long does the whitening effect last?
Although long-term, the effects are not permanent. Teeth will always go yellow over time as we eat and drink. This can be accelerated by drinking red wine, coffee, and tea, and other staining foods and drinks, so it can be difficult to give an estimate.
Please also note that veneers, crowns, and dental resins may not be affected in the same way, so you may see some discolouration between original and prosthetic teeth.
Does this treatment damage the teeth?

While some over the counter teeth whitening products can damage teeth, we use a specific type of chemical that has been studied in depth. Results show that this has little to no harmful effects on your teeth, so the whitening treatment is completely safe.
Between 10-20% of people who whiten their teeth experience sensitivity, either during the night when whitening, or the following day. This sensitivity is transient, and normally goes away within 24 hours. Using sensitive toothpastes, or special desensitising gels available from Portobello Dental Clinic will normally alleviate the sensitivity.
Important note:
Carbamide peroxide is only licensed for use in Ireland by dental professionals and cannot be bought in shops or beauty salons.
Any use of products which contain high levels of peroxide (>18% carbamide peroxide or equivalent) is now illegal. This means that “Laser bleaching”, or one-hour “power whitening” treatments are no longer legally available.
